Mr. Dan Tangherlini
Director
District Division of Transportation
2000 14th Street,
N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20009
Dear Mr. Tangherlini:
ANC3F has been advised by residents
of the 2800/2900 blocks of Davenport Street that the street has become
a major route for commuters traveling across the city, through Rock Creek
Park, via Grant Road/Davenport Street to Connecticut Avenue, since it was
recently resurfaced. They report that vehicles now accelerate more than
previously up Davenport Street as they leave the park and cross Broad Branch
Road.
There are three driveways on a blind curve portion of this section of Davenport Street and residents are endangered when they exit these driveways.
This is not a new problem. On July 21, 1994, ANC3F sent a letter to DPW concurring with a request for rumble strips on this section of Davenport Street. Nothing was done at that time to control the traffic.
During January 2002 these problems were discussed with the Ward 3 Traffic Engineer and it appeared that there was agreement that traffic calming measurers and additional traffic signs are needed for this section of Davenport Street. However, nothing has been done.
At
its regular monthly meeting on November 18, 2002, a quorum being present,
ANC3F voted 6-1-0 to support the enclosed petition requesting that rumble
strips be installed in the 2800/2900 block of Davenport Street, N.W. east
of the "hidden driveway" sign. The petition is signed by nine of the ten
households in the 2800 and 2900 blocks of Davenport Street. The petition
requests rumble strips but if DDOT believes that some other traffic calming
measure are appropriate for controlling the speed of vehicles in the section
of Davenport Street we will defer to the expertise of DDOT.
We also requested that the "hidden
driveway" sign, located west of 2851 Davenport Street, which is in disrepair
be replaced. A request for this replacement was made on October 21, 2001
and assigned Service Request No. 205686.
The above requested traffic calming devices and signs need to be installed at the earliest possible date.
Very sincerely yours,
Robert V. Maudlin
